Waste Management Vendor/Contractor Insurance Requirements

Waste Management contracts with thousands of small businesses across the country. From consulting to hazardous waste removal, these businesses have dramatically different risks. So, it’s no surprise that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all insurance requirement for vendors and contractors working with Waste Management. For example, it may not be necessary for an equipment rental company to have pollution liability insurance, but it’s a good idea for radioactive waste disposal.

Waste Management’s insurance requirements are split into 5 tiers, based on the types of risk your business services present. In this article, we’ll lay out the insurance requirements for each tier, the endorsements and specifications that apply to everyone, and how to get a certificate of insurance that meets your exact requirement.

There is a separate requirement for those providing physical goods to Waste Management (Suppliers) rather than services. If you’re a Supplier, Read Waste Management Supplier Insurance Requirements.

Waste Management Vendor Insurance Requirements

Every Waste Management Vendor will be required to have combinations of the following coverages and endorsements. Higher risk vendors may need all of them, while some vendors may need only two or three. In the next section, we’ll break the requirements down for each tier to see which coverages, and at what limits, your business requires.

Workers’ Compensation

If you have employees, you’ll need to meet the workers’ compensation requirements for your state. You can find your state’s requirements here. Employers’ Liability is part of your Workers’ Compensation requirement.

Commercial General Liability

General Liability insurance covers third party bodily injury and property damage. For example, if you spilled a recycling bin and someone slipped on the mess, general liability would help cover their medical bills. For all vendors, Waste Management requires your General Liability policy to include both property damage and bodily injury coverage.

Automobile Liability

Automobile Liability, and Hired and Non-Owned Auto, provide similar coverage to your personal auto policy, but they apply to business related endeavors. For example, if you were in a crash while working, your personal auto insurance may not cover it -even if you were driving your own vehicle.

Pollution Liability

Pollution Liability is often a part of (or endorsement on) your General Liability policy. It covers third party bodily injury and property damage caused by hazardous waste materials. This is expressly required by Waste Management because many General Liability policies will specifically exclude claims involving hazardous waste.

GarageKeepers

This provides coverage for damage or loss to customer’s vehicle while left in the insured’s care. For example, if a truck was damaged or stollen while being cleaned (or stored awaiting pickup), GarageKeepers would cover the damages.

On Hook Coverage

Similar to GarageKeepers, On Hook Coverage provides coverage for damage to a customer’s vehicle while in transport. For example, if a car slid off of a tow truck on the interstate, On Hook would pay for the damages.

Additional Insured Endorsement

All vendors will need to have Waste Management listed as an additional insured, meaning that your insurance protects them as well if anything should happen. Your COI should read: Waste Management Holdings, Inc. & All Affiliated, related & subsidiary companies are additionally insured.

Certificate Holder

You’ll also need to list Waste Management as the certificate holder. This allows them to receive information on your policy, like early cancellations. The address should be the local Waste Management branch in the city you’ll be working in.

Insurance Requirements by Tier

Now, let’s see what you need! If you provide services that would fall under multiple tiers, you need to meet the highest requirement. Remember, if your service had an * next to it, there will be a separate requirement listed below.
